Riding for the Disabled Barlavento

A Associação de Equitação Adaptada do Barlavento The Associação de Equitação Adaptada Barlavento / Riding for the Disabled Barlavento (RDB) is situated in the West of the Algarve, Portugal and was created at the beginning of 2007 to promote the aims of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). We operate in the beautiful Barlavento region of the Algarve and are based at the O Centro Hípico at Quinta do Paraiso Alto, Bensafrim. This location is in a central catchment location for the West Algarve, close to the Monchique Hills and just 5kms from the old fishing Port of Lagos.


This historic town played an important part in the story of discovery and conquest of the rest of the world. It was from its harbour that Vasco da Gama sailed in 1499 on his historic and epic discovery voyage. It was the capital of the Algarve from 1578 until 1756 and there remain several ancient buildings to testify to its historic glory. From its port maritime expeditions were embarked onto discover the world at the orders of Prince Henry the Navigator. It was also from Lagos, that an armada of 800 vessels led by the ill-fated heir to the Portuguese throne Dom Sebastião embarked in 1578 in its failed attempt to capture the town of Ceuta in Morocco.

Awards won at the Disabled Special Olympics - October 18th

The Riding for the Disabled Special Olympics Regional Competition was held on 18th October at Bensafrim.  RDB entered 9 Competitors for the competition: 5 from NECI, 2 from Algoz and 2 from Santo Amaro.

Lucelia Wins Silver Medals At The Special Olympic World Games In Abu Dhabi

Lucelia Gloria, aged 30, a rider from Riding For The Disabled Barlavento (RDB) has won two silver medals at the above games. Lucelia won her two medals in the Level CS – English working trails and the Level CS – English equitation.
